JUST ONE IN FOUR ADULTS DO THIS HEALTHY HABIT

That subject line is enough to grab your attention, am I right? People are intrigued by how to be healthy, yet not everyone follows through. This is certainly understandable as we are creatures of habit and behavior change is HARD WORK.

According to the American Council on Exercise, just one in four people meet both the cardiovascular and muscle-strengthening guidelines for adults in this country.

WAIT, WHAT?!

We have work to do, my friends … both literally and figuratively!

But wait, there’s more! This industry expert goes on to share additional eye-opening statistics:

  • Only half of adults get enough physical activity to help reduce or prevent disease.

  • About 31 million adults, ages 50 and older, get NO physical activity beyond daily living.

This last statistic makes me especially sad. I worry that people aren’t fully living, and I wonder what’s getting in their way. On the flip side, I also feel inspired because there is a true need to better support people of all ages and abilities within the one place that they spend the most hours ... at work. That’s why Wellness Collective was founded!

These statistics also help to explain why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have launched an initiative called Active People, Healthy Nation. This comes with the very large goal of getting 27 million Americans to move more by 2027.

Let’s work together, in 2021 and beyond, to get people moving. There’s so much we can do, as leaders, to encourage this effort. This includes modeling exercise ourselves, inviting others to join us and getting people out of their seats – in EVERY virtual meeting go forward. (Is that too much to ask?)

I often wonder how many people don’t even know what they are missing. Less back pain, better sleep, heightened creativity/innovation and more energy/stamina are just a few workouts away.

No one should travel that road alone. We are here to support and cheer people on if and when they need us!

Speaking of cheers, a very big cheers to you all! A new year has never looked so good! 😉 Bring it on!

Happy, happy New Year to you and yours!
